A rare and particularly fine example of a MK IV A aircraft altimeter from the early to mid period of WW1.
By S. Smith & Sons Ltd, London. Serial No 1363 F.
Stamped on the rear of the case with the War Department 'Arrow'.
Circa - 1915 / 16.
In excellent original condition - early altimeters such as this were still being finished to a very high standard,
having a silvered dial and bevelled glass; later examples had black painted dials. The original glass was
unfortunately cracked, so a replacement to the exact specifications has been fitted. It responds well to
barometric pressure variations, so can be demonstrated as a simple barometer in the home.
Unusually we also have a MK IV A. Tachometer available - this would make an excellent pairing.
A highly collectable early WW1 aircraft instrument.
