An unusual WW1 British aircraft altimeter display piece.
Circa – 1918.
The silvered dial re-engraved in period with a barometer
scale for home use. At the end of WW1 various makers
had stocks of unused altimeters and other instruments,
one-way of disposing of these items was to repurpose
This particular altimeter was made by Short & Mason.
On the reverse of the dial can be seen the original
altimeter details and makers name.
Interestingly it was not completed as such, and was
mounted onto an oval section of solid mahogany to
create a pleasing display piece.
In original period condition – the altimeter is operational
as a barometer.
