A rare early French aviation compass by Henry Lepaute, Paris.

Circa - 1914.

Highly regarded 19th Century instrument maker, especially for fine
clocks and watches.

The Lepaute compass is known to have been used on early French
airships (Dirigibles).
It is a compensated twin pivot design having accurate course
markings for aviation use - NM / NV (Magnetic North & True North)
The original rubber bushings between the pivots are in place,
fitted for shock resistance.

The instrument is in original condition with most of its military
black paint, some loss and light corrosion to mounting bracket.
It spins freely with readable dial, the inside of the glass is
slightly cloudy.

A fine collectable early French aviation instrument.
